What do you call it?

What do you call it when you know it’s not worth the fight?
What do you call it when you love a thing that won’t buy you a life?
What do you call it when someone loves you and you can’t give it back?
Call it patience, small and steady.
Call it keeping, doing it for the sake of doing.
Call it gentle grief, soft, honest, without noise.
Call it courage, leaving with open hands.
Call it stubborn hope, blooming though it won’t pay.
Call it kindness, returning love with what you can give.
No single name fits, just quiet choices:
the slow work of staying whole.
